I’ve seen the recent Indoraptor and Stegoceratops concept art, and here’s my opinion on them.
Stegoceratops: I like this new concept art for featuring a juvenile, but I think the patterns are a little too extensive. I do like the original take on the frill while still maintinaing nasutoceratopsid.
Indoraptor: Oh boy, this is going to be a long one....
Now, I would like to elaborate on why I like the Indoraptor so much legacy-wise. Before Fallen Kingdom released in 2018, back in 2017 something, I remember getting excited for the new hybrid going to appear in the film, based on the only photo we had at the time featuring its mouth and teeth with Bayona looking at it inside a cage.
That image alone set the mystery for what it would ultimately look like in the final film. This seemed to be the most exciting prospect the film would offer thus far, and depictions like these.

There was even an old video called “Night of the Indoraptor” which had a pack of them but they were grey and greyer spikes and had Indominus features. Oh, and it was hand drawn, I believe, where their sounds were a mix between JP raptors and Indominus rex features.
And then I came across multiple depictions of what the Indoraptor could theoretically look like in the new film (I call these Pre-FK Indoraptor designs), and I’ll leave the links to them so that I can further explain what I’m talking about.
Then there’s these by NikoRex.

Some by WolfHooligans...

And a gorgeous one by Israel-C which was more of a “Miniature Indominus rex” (which the name alone set such an exciting prospect going into the sequel)

And there are these from ArtStation by Maxwell Rodrigues, which also brings in the nostalgic vibes as well as the fourth one which is just so good.

Aside from these fan works, there was also prior concept art to the newest ones by Christopher Brändström and Jama Jurabaev (the monolophosaurid skulled designs and the ones with more skin on the back of their heads reminding me of the human dinosaur hybrid concepts of JP4, as well as what would be the official model).
The ones by Christopher with the warts and physical deformities and all that are honestly not my thing, as they are gross and monstrous looking. The red and black one, on the other hand, is my favorite out of the bunch, as it really reminds me of the Indominus rex and resembles the pre-FK fan designs that had red and black.
Jama’s Monolophosaurid crested Indoraptor designs are more or less okay, and his other alternate Indoraptor designs aren’t quite there yet for me.
Now onto the newly revealed concept arts, starting with these.

These ones are not my favorite honestly, because of how exaggeratedly monstrous these are. I mean, it even has a slapstick Stegosaurus thagomizer, the exaggerated armor, and neck frills in reference to the JP Dilophosaurus, and the claw on the wrist is not bad, but eh.

This latest as of yet artwork, where it’s a black venom-spitting Velociraptor-designed Indoraptor designed after black mambas or spitting cobras, with the texture and apparently the skull shape being designed after the fore mentioned snakes. I like this design, as it’s down to earth, but I feel more could be done with it, but one thing to point out is that it has five fingers, a very interesting aspect.

And here’s a gallery of five, which may be my favorite Indoraptor concept art designs, especially the first and second ones. The first two are designs that confront Owen, while the last three are just concept visuals each with distinguishing features which I’ll get to.
The first and second ones on the left are, what I feel, to steal my heart the most, as not only do they take me back to the days of the pre-FK fan designs (especially the first one with the orange eyes), but just feel like true pre-Prototype Indoraptor designs (that’s a head canon, BTW). Another thing to point out is that they both have five toes on their feet; three normal toes with claws, a hallux, and an extra toe sporting a sickle shaped claw. Interesting design choice.
The last three on the right are very neat as well, especially the bottom right one. The third one on the left has a red stripe with bluish feathers and a black skin and whitish underbelly, the one under that has a greyish, brownish, and maybe very vaguely greenish tones with what appears to be irregular spines, and the third one has a blackish grey color scheme with osteoderms and even horns atop the eyes, moreso resembling the Indominus rex.
Either way, these are fantastic concept art reveals which were certainly not expected, but some of them are pretty great to look at. Just throwing what I had in mind about these out there.
I agree. I mainly like the concept art where they seem at least somewhat paleontological and not monsters. I also think that Indoraptor would seem more realistic with dromaeosaur feathers. But then again hybrid dinosaurs aren't real either.
Sure, I actually like JW’s style on the dinosaurs and I don’t want fully accurate dinosaurs, but at least make them believable, paleontological (to an extent) and recognizable like they have thus far. This is why the Indominus rex and the Indoraptor are done very right and beautifully designed. Creating very crazy and out-there beasts for this franchise wouldn’t work for me.
One of my favorite parts on the hybrids are the quills.
What do you think?
