The American cockroach (Periplaneta americana), also known as the ship cockroach, kakerlac, and Bombay canary, is a species of cockroach that is commonly found in houses, and often considered a pest. Despite its name, it originally comes from Africa and the Middle East. It was introduced in the Americas during the 17 century as a result of human commercial patterns. It is also known to fly.
The American cockroach inhabits a variety of habitats, but is commonly found in tropical climates. It is virtually cosmopolitan as a result of global commerce.
