Anacondas are boas in the genus Eunectes that are found in the tropical regions of South America. Even though the name applies to a group of snakes, it is often used to refer to the green anaconda (Eunectes murinus). There are five species of anaconda known. The anaconda is an aquatic snake that preys on fishes, river fowls, and caimans. There are also videos of anacondas preying on domestic animals such as goats. It has one predator: the jaguar.
The fossil record of the anacondas is scarce. An extinct species of anaconda exists during the Miocene period, but its validity has been questioned. This group of animals might have been affected by an artifact called the Pull of the Recent.
