The axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum) is a species of salamander that is native to Mexico, and is critically endangered in the wild due to habitat loss and invasive species. Fortunately for this little animal, it can be found in captivity as it is a common exhibit in zoos or aquariums.
The axolotl matures without undergoing metamorphosis into a terrestrial adult form. This is known as neoteny, or juvenilization. It is also capable of regenerating parts of its body like limbs or parts of their eyes.
