Becklespinax (meaning "Beckles' spines) is a genus of theropod dinosaur, now scientifically synonymous with Altispinax, that lived during the Early Cretaceous in what is now England.

Characteristics[]

The Becklespinax clones have an appearance based of recent depictions by paleontologists that resemble Concavenator. Like many of the cloned theropods, they have pronated wrists. The clones also have large white spines sticking out from the back of their necks and a small sail on their back. One of them is colored jaded green with a red face and black markings, the other is colored various shades of brown, with splotchy darker markings on its snout.

Behavior[]

The Becklespinax was shown to be a formidable hunter that doesn't seem to give up on its prey, as even when one was distracted by a hologram, it refocused a short while after. However, they were willing to give up if they are stuck in a river due to the risk of drowning. The Becklespinax was shown being able to coexist with herbivorous dinosaurs in the same enclosure like Brachiosaurus, Parasaurolophus, Gallimimus, and Stegosaurus without attacking them. Albeit, this is probably due to the watering hole in the center of the enclosure, as both herbivorous and carnivorous dinosaurs have been show to coexist in such areas such as this. Despite this seemingly passive nature, Becklespinax have an aggressive temperament at times, as one is shown to attack a T. rex hologram despite believing it to be that actual creature.

These animals are also notable for being able to hold their breath for a surprising amount of time. As one individual was able to survive underwater for a short period of time without oxygen. Possibly hinting at a somewhat semi-aquatic nature.

History[]

Jurassic World: Chaos Theory[]

"Free Fall"[]

After Yasmina, Ben and Sammy were tracked on Dinosaur Danger Free Island, The Broker sent officers Jensen and Jared to the island with the pair of Becklespinax in an attempt to kill them. After the security system was disabled, the second Becklespinax remained close within the opening while the first ventured into the island, where she started terrorizing citizens and eating them. She then focused on chasing Yaz and Ben in the latter's van. The van stopped to get Sammy as the dinosaur attacked the vehicle. Afterwards, the Becklespinax continued to pursue them until she gave up the chase. To their surprise, they encountered the second Becklespinax destroying the sign of the island while the other caught up to them. As hope was lost for the Nublar Six, the DPW members arrived at the scene, but they instead shot the tires. Another Becklespinax continuously rammed into the van on the island's bridge, causing both the van and the dinosaur to fall into the sea.

"That Night"[]

As Ben, Sammy and Yaz were sinking inside of the van, one Becklespinax attempted, but struggled, to swim back to the surface. Eventually, it managed to get to the surface and breathe before swimming back to shore where it was recaptured and tranquilized by the two officers and placed into a big transport truck along with another Becklespinax, who was already heavily tranquilized.

"The Drop"[]

The truck was transported to a Department of Prehistoric Wildlife facility where the two Becklespinax twins were directed into the field where herbivore dinosaurs were held in a massive enclosure. During a car chase between Jared against Sammy and Yaz, the latter drove into the Herbivore Field Enclosure, attempting to make a stampede. However, it failed and the girls instead made Jared drive straight into the watering hole. When the fake agent exited, he came face to face with the Becklespinax he tased earlier and tried to shoot it down. However, he ran out of ammo and was mauled to death as the herbivores watch.

"Into the Fog"[]

Inside the DPW warehouse, Darius mentioned the attack of the Becklespinax and the Atrociraptors as he theorized that someone within the DPW was trying to kill them. Another Becklespinax was seen inside one of the cages in said warehouse.

"The End of the Beginning"[]

The Becklespinax isn't seen again, but it is most likely saved by real workers of the DPW alongside the other dinosaurs left in the warehouse.

Trivia[]

  • Visually, the head of the Becklespinax seems to be similar in appearance to the Giganotosaurus in Jurassic World: Dominion and the Tarbosaurus in Jurassic World Camp Cretaceous: Hidden Adventure.
  • Becklespinax is the first dinosaur in the film canon to appear under the name of a junior synonym rather than under the name of the actual non-synonym species, in this case being Altispinax.
  • It remains unknown who cloned the Becklespinax.
  • So far, Becklespinax and Smilodon are the only film canon species to not appear in Jurassic World Evolution 2.
  • Becklespinax is one of the many dinosaurs that appeared in the Dinopedia section of Jurassic Park Institute.
  • Becklespinax was one of the first dinosaurs rumored for the show back in late August of 2023, after the Captivz toyline for the show was revealed at the New York Toy Fair.
  • Becklespinax is potentially the 8th Semi-Aquatic creature in the franchise, alongside Nothosaurus, Spinosaurus, Suchomimus, Ouranosaurus, Dimetrodon, Pyroraptor, and Baryonyx.
  • It’s possible that the reason why the name Becklespinax was chosen over Altispinax because Becklespinax is an invalid genus and gave more creative freedom over design choices.
