Jurassic Park Wiki

Cassowaries (Indonesian: kasuari; Biak: man suar 'bird strong'; Tok Pisin: muruk; Papuan: kasu weri 'horned head') are ratites (flightless birds without a keel on their sternum bones) of the genus Casuarius native to the tropical forests of New Guinea, the Moluccas, and northeastern Australia. There are three species of cassowary, as well as a fourth extinct one. Its closest living relative is the emu.

It is recognizable by its blue head and its keratinous casque, which is used for communications, similar to the hadrosaurs of the Cretaceous period. Its main weapon is their feet, which are equipped with sharp claws. Cassowaries kick their attacker with their powerful legs, proving the claw lethal.

The cassowary has been labeled the world's most dangerous bird, since it is known to attack both people and dogs, though it pales in comparison to the common ostrich, which kills two or three humans per year in South Africa. The bird is usually wary of humans. However, when it is provoked, it is capable of inflicting serious, even fatal, injuries.
