Coelacanths are fish in the class Actinistia. There are two extant species of coelacanth, the West Indian Ocean coelacanth and the Indonesian coelacanth (Latimeria menadoensis). The range of the West Indian Ocean coelacanth includes the Comoro Islands, Madagascar, and Mozambique. The range of the Indonesian coelacanth includes Sulawesi, Papua, Southwest Papua, and North Maluku.

The coelacanth was historically known by fishermen, but it wasn't until December 22, 1938 that a collected individual was recognized by scientists. Coelacanths are known as a "living fossil" as this group of animals first appeared in the Devonian period.

The West Indian Ocean coelacanth is listed as critically endangered by the IUCN, due to overfishing. The Indonesian coelacanth is also threatened, but is listed as vulnerable instead.

Jurassic Park franchise[]

The West Indian Ocean coelacanth is mentioned under its scientific name in the description of the Museum Comparative Zoology, Havard, from the museum guide of Jurassic Park Institute.[1]
