The common cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis), also known as the European common cuttlefish, is among the largest and best-known species of cuttlefish, growing up to 49 centimeters (19 inches) in mantle length and 4 kilograms (8.8 pounds) in weight, while groups from subtropical seas are smaller and rarely exceed 30 centimeters (12 inches) in mantle length.
It is a migratory species that lives in the Mediterranean sea, North Sea, and Baltic Sea (although subspecies have been proposed as far south as South Africa), living on sand and mud seabeds and can tolerate brackish water conditions, spending the summer and spring seasons inshore for spawning and then move to depths of 100–200 meters (330–660 feet) during the autumn and winter.

The DNA of the common cuttlefish is used for the Adaptive Camouflage trait gene (added in the Secrets of Dr. Wu DLC) that can be used to allow the Indominus rex to camouflage.
