The common garter snake (Thamnophis sirtalis) is a species of snake indigenous to North America and is found widely across the continent. Its main diet is amphibians and earthworms, but other small animals from insects or fishes to small birds as well. It has a venom that may be toxic to amphibians, but not for humans. It is also resistant to naturally occuring poisons in their prey.
The common garter snake is known to be the state reptile of Massachusetts.
