The coyote (Canis latrans), also known as the American jackal, prairie wolf, and brush wolf, is a species of canine that is native to North America. It is smaller than its close relative: the wolf. It fills the same ecological niche as the golden jackal (Canis aureus) in Eurasia, except it is generally larger. It is known to adapt and expand into environments, including urban areas. While coyotes live in packs, they aren't specialized hunters of big prey, contrary to the wolf. 19 subspecies have been recognized as of 2005.

Coyotes were once confined to open plains and arid regions of the western half of North America until the European colonization. Nowaday, the coyote is widespread thoughout all of North and Central America (with the exception of tundras). The Pleistocene coyote (Canis latrans orcutti), an extinct subspecies of coyote, is also known. Coyotes have occasionally mated with wolves and dogs, resulting in hybrids.

Predators of the coyote include cougars, wolves, black bears, grizzly bears, American alligators, Canadian lynxes, and golden eagles. Interestingly, it feeds or dens alongside the red fox.
