Departure II is the first and and only chapter in the Seventh Configuration. It explains how the dinosaurs on Isla Sorna will soon die off and mankind's destructive habits.

Plot[]

The Lost World's last chapter ends the novel as Ian Malcolm, Jack Thorne, Richard Levine, Sarah Harding, Arby Benton and Kelly Curtis leave the island by boat. Levine hopes to still gather data from this 'Lost World' via the cameras left behind but Harding reminds him of her observation that there are too many predators per area in the island and therefore something is amiss. She and Malcolm explains the mystery: The dinosaurs all al infected with a prion-disease called DX, fed to the young dinosaurs via grounded goat meat by the InGen scientists. The disease spreads as the Procompsognathus eat the faeces of the dinosaurs and the raptors spread it as well when they bite other creatures. Levine worries because he was bitten by a Compy but Sarah dismisses it and says they will bring him to a doctor in San José. The group continue to wonder if the island will inform them much about extinction. Malcolm remarks no and mentions other extinction events like the Permian extinction and that humans have more destructive habits than nature. Thorne metions when America was a new country, people believed in phlogiston which actually isnt real and mentions other unrealistic items. He finally asks Kelly for the compass to find south as he wants to head home.

Trivia[]

  • Unlike Jurassic Park, this novel ends without an epilogue but with a single chapter in a 'Configuration.'
  • Michael Crichton writes that the Permian extinction killed "killed eighty percent of all life on the planet (and) no one knows why that catastrophe happened." The link above says otherwise.
