The emperor penguin (Aptenodytes forsteri) is a species of penguin that is endemic to Antarctica. It is an iconic animal of Antarctica due to its behavior and its colors. Documentaries and movies such as March of the Penguins and Happy Feet also play a role in its popularity. Feathers of the head are black, the belly is white, and the breast and ear patches are pale-yellow. The chicks are covered with silver-grey down, with a black head and a white mask. Like all penguin species, the emperor penguin is flightless, its wings flattened into flippers for a marine habitat. This makes it a very good swimmer. The species is listed as near threatened by the IUCN due to climate changes.
Emperor penguins are social animals. In defence against the cold, a colony of them would form a compact huddle, ranging in size from ten to several hundred birds. During hatching, females will go to the sea for food while the males stay to guard the egg. Predators of the emperor penguin include leopard seals and orcas. Southern giant petrels are known to prey on chicks as well.
