The European stag beetle (Lucanus cervus), also known as the greater stag beetle, is a species of stag beetle that is widespread throughout much of Europe. It is also one of the best known species of stag beetle in Western Europe, and is the eponymous example of the genus. Like other members of its family, it is sexually dimorphic; the males have larger mandibles, yet are too weak to be harmful. The mandibles are used for combat against a female. Larvae stag beetles feed on underground rotten broadleaf wood.
