Protosphyraena ("early barracuda") was a swordfish-like marine fish that lived worldwide in the Upper Cretaceous Period. Scientists first misclassified it as an early genus of a barracuda, hence the name. Recent research shows that the genus Protosphyraena is not at all related to the true swordfish-family Xiphiidae, but belongs to the extinct family Pachycormidae.
