The goblin shark (Mitsukurina owstoni) is a species of shark that is found in deep sea oceans worldwide. It has a distinctive profile compared to other sharks with an elongated, flat snout, and highly protrusible jaws containing prominent nail-like teeth. It has been considered as a living fossil due to its family, the Mitsukurinidae, which were around 125 million years ago. Sightings of goblin sharks are rare, but they are not endangered.
The jaws of this shark extend dramatically when feeding in order to catch its prey, which are mostly teleost fishes, cephalopods, and crustaceans near the sea floor and in the middle of the water column. The flat snout is used to detect prey though electric fields produced by nearby ones. The goblin shark may not be a fast swimmer, but it might be an ambush predator instead. Ram feeding is also used, which is typical of other mackerel sharks. Like them, it appears to be viviparous.
