Gomphotherium is an extinct genus of gomphothere proboscidean from the Neogene of Eurasia (Mongolia, China, Japan, Pakistan, Germany, Hungary, Portugal and France), Africa (Egypt) and North America (Nebraska and New Mexico), whom many of the species were similar in size to the Asian elephant. The genus is probably paraphyletic, meaning that it describes a grouping that consists of the grouping's last common ancestor and most of its descendants, but excludes one or more subgroups.
