The great blue heron (Ardea herodias) is a species of heron that inhabits any wetland habitat of North and Central America, as well as the Caribbean and the Galapagos Islands. The great white heron was a former separate species from Florida that is now recognized as a subspecies of the great blue heron. It is the largest heron native to North America, and the 3rd largest heron after the goliath heron and the white-bellied heron. The great blue heron is erroneously sometimes referred to as a crane. Herons and cranes are different groups of birds, and can be easily distinguished in flight; cranes hold their necks straight when flying, but herons bend theirs into an S shape.

While the primary food of the great blue heron is fish, it is also known to feed on a range of prey. This includes: amphibians, lizards, small turtles, snakes, aquatic crustaceans, grasshoppers, aquatic insects like dragonflies, small mammals, eastern cottontails, and birds such as ducks and phalaropes.
