The hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius) is a large semiaquatic mammal native to sub-Saharan Africa. Despite its similarities to pigs, the hippopotamus's closest relatives are cetaceans.

Behavioral[]

The individual hippopotamus in Jurassic World: Chaos Theory exhibited persistent social investigation, consistently tracking the Camp Family's river raft, and causing turbulence sufficient to panic nearby Brachiosaurus.

Upon approaching the raft, the hippopotamus displayed territorial assertion through aggressive posturing, vocalization, and mounting the raft with its front legs until pacified by Kenji's fruit offerings.

However, Kenji hit the hippo in the face with a fruit, prompting the animal to attack the raft again, employing surprise aquatic ambush tactics and breaching the water's surface to inflict significant damage.

Season 2[]

"Up the River"[]

A hippo attacks the Nublar Six and Zayna Mballo when they are travelling with canoes through a river through West Africa. They can successfully repel the aggressive mammal at first, but in the process, Ben accidentally drops Brooklynn's cell phone into the hippo's mouth, and the animal swallows it. Since the hippo continues to chase the group, Zayna finally comes up with the idea of swimming the canoes into the deeper water, as the hippo cannot stand there. The plan works and the hippo gives up the chase, although shortly afterwards it turns out that the canoes have been damaged by its attacks.

Later, when the group is attacked by a Suchomimus at a canoe site, the hippopotamus reappears. It first chases Yaz, but when it notices the Suchomimus, a fierce fight ensues between the territorial mammal and the theropod. In the chaos, Darius and the others are able to flee, although they accidentally leave Yaz behind when she is knocked unconscious by the tail of Suchomimus.

"All Night Long"[]

When Yaz regains consciousness at night at the canoe site, she sees the Suchomimus eating from the fresh carcass of the hippo, which shows that it killed it somehow in the battle.

However, the fierce and exhausting fight with the hippopotamus had not been without consequences for the Suchomimus, and when it faced the Majungasaurus Major in battle that same night, it was still so exhausted that it could not fight with its full strength and was killed by the other theropod.

Trivia[]

  • This is the first modern-day animal that has spent a significant amount of time attacking the protagonists.
  • Oddly, most of the hippo's vocalizations inaccurately seemed to comprise of modified bear roars and frequently roared with its mouth fully open.
    • Real-life hippos do not sound ursine in any way, instead communicating through nasal grunts and whoops for social communication and low-pitched growls and piercing bellows for aggressive interaction.
  • It remains unknown how the hippo was killed by the Suchomimus after holding its own in the fight.
    • One possibly is that the Suchomimus may have slashed a softer area of skin on the Hippo's neck with its claws. And bleeding out from a sliced vein or artery.
