Horseshoe crabs are marine and brackishwater arthropods of the family Limulidae and the only living members of the order Xiphosura. Despite their name, they are not true crabs or crustaceans: they are chelicerates, most closely related to arachnids such as spiders, ticks, and scorpions.

Creation[]

Sometime before the opening of Jurassic Park, an unknown species of horseshoe crab were brought in the marine facility to represent Paleozoic life.

A bunch of horseshoe crabs were seen in the marine facility.

It is unknown what happened to them after the Isla Nublar Incident of 1993, though it is presumed they died, likely of starvation.

Trivia[]

  • Horseshoe crabs are a popular example for living fossil, first appearing at around 445 mya, and are still alive today.
  • The prehistoric horseshoe crab Mesolimulus appeared in the PC version of Jurassic Park.
