Huayangosaurus is a very important member of the same clade to which Stegosaurus belongs. It’s the oldest known member of the stegosaur clade and it seems to demonstrate how these dinosaurs evolved the plates along their backs. Huayangosaurus was less than half the size of its later members.
This dinosaur is considered one of the most important fossils to be discovered in China. It is one of only two stegosaurs to be found with an associated skull. Huayangosaurus exhibits many characteristics of an evolutionarily transitional species. The plates along its back become more spike-like the closer they are to the tail. This supports the theory that stegosaur plates evolved from spikes. The skull and teeth are also more primitive than later stegosaurs, as this species still had premaxillary teeth, which disappeared in later stegosaurs.[1]

Bio[]
Profile[]
- Like all stegosaurids, Huayangosaurus eats from ground herbivore feeders. They are armored and posses spiked tails capable of inflicting damage to other dinosaurs. Huayangosaurus can live in modest sized social groups. They are relatively tolerant of dinosaurs from other species, but don't like to feel overwhelmed. Huayangosaurus needs a good sized territory with plenty of grassland, and a slightly smaller area of forest.

Description[]
- Huayangosaurus was a small Stegosaur from China. Its name means 'Huayang lizard' from the region it was first discovered. It had the same small head, back plates, and spiked tail. Unlike Stegosaurus, its back plates were more like spikes.
Discovery[]
- A dozen specimens of Huayangosaurus were excavated from Dashanpu Quarry in 1979 and 1980. The holotype specimen of a partial skeleton, with relatively complete head, was taken from the lower Shaximiao Formation.
Paleoecology[]
- The region where Huayangosaurus has been found supported a wide variety of flora and fauna. With many aquatic species present as well.
Trivia[]
- In reality, Huayangosaurus isn't native to the Ziliujing Formation, because this dig site dates back to the early Jurassic (Sinemurian to Toarcian), while Huayangosaurus lived during the Bathonian to Callovian stages of the middle Jurassic.
Jurassic World Evolution 2[]
Huayangosaurus appears in the deluxe edition of Jurassic World Evolution 2.
Jurassic World: Primal Ops[]
Huayangosaurus was the one of the four Chinese stegosaurs that could be saved in the game alongside Chungkingosaurus, Gigantspinosaurus, and Tuojiangosaurus. Its model was from Jurassic World Evolution and was an epic stegosaur in the Stegosaurus family.
Jurassic World Play[]
Huayangosaurus is among the dinosaurs that can be obtained from the Jurassic World: Chaos Theory toyline.
Toys[]
Jurassic World: Epic Evolution[]
Huayangosaurus would be featured in the Danger Pack of Jurassic World: Epic Evolution for the first time as a toy.
