The jaguar (Panthera onca) is a species of panther that lives in dense forests of Central and South America, as well as flooded wetlands and dry grasslands. It is also the only living member of the genus Panthera to live in the Americas. It is the 3rd largest in the world, exceeded in size only by the tiger and the lion.
The jaguar's coat ranges from pale yellow to tan or reddish-yellow, with a whitish underside and covered in black spots. These patterns serve as camouflage in dense areas and patchy shadows. Some individuals are born completely black, where it is a symptom of melanism. Being an apex predator, the jaguar is a good swimmer, preying on fish, turtles, capybaras, caimans, and anacondas. It also hunts anteaters, deer, sloths, monkeys, armadillos, peccaries, agoutis, tapirs, and (where and when wild prey is scarce) cattle.
The jaguar is featured prominently in the mythology of the indigenous people of the Americas such as Aztec and Maya civilizations.
