In the Novel[]
In the novel, Ed Regis states that the island currently had about 20 personnel on the island, with more arriving prior to the September opening. In reality, 20 personnel is an extremely low amount of staff for a zoo 22 square miles in area. Later in the novel, Michael Crichton states that of 24 people on the island, eight were dead and another six were missing. Subtracting Grant, Sattler, Malcolm, Gennaro, Hammond, Tim, Lex and Nedry, the remaining placeholders leave the staff at 16:
