The Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis), also called the Komodo monitor, is the biggest monitor lizard alive on the planet, although Megalania is the one who held that title. In fact, Megalania looks like the Komodo dragon. It is endemic to the Indonesian islands of Komodo, Rinca, Flores, Gili Dasami, and Gili Motang. It is listed as Endangered by the IUCN, but is protected under Indonesian law.
It is the apex predator on the islands, preying on large mammals and even its young kind. Human fatalities by this animal can happen too. It is known that the Komodo dragon has a toxic saliva which it uses to take down its large prey. It is also a very good swimmer.
The Komodo dragon was the driving factor for an expedition in 1926, and said expedition was what inspired the movie King Kong.
