Lego Jurassic Park The Unofficial Retelling

LEGO Jurassic Park: The Unofficial Retelling is a LEGO animated feature film that's a retelling of the original Jurassic Park in LEGO style. It premiered on Peacock on October 10th, 2023, on the film's 30th Anniversary.

Plot[]

After finding his journal, Chaos Mathematician Dr. Ian Malcolm recalls the mishaps and mayhem from 30 years ago about the island amusement park filled with prehistoric dinosaurs who escape and run amok...a story 65 million bricks in the making.

Cast[]

Trivia[]

  • Steven Spielberg makes a non-speaking cameo as Ian Malcolm's neighbor.
    • Ian indirectly-mentions the movie Jaws when he talks about how his neighbor is always creating beautiful things like sharks and dinosaurs.
  • The fourth wall is broken when Ian and John briefly turn to the camera and John smiles at the viewers after Ray clarifies that John is always right.
  • The T. rex skeleton falling and breaking into pieces could be a reference to episode 6 of the miniseries Legend of Isla Nublar, also produced by Ken Cunningham. Ironically, in this episode, Colin Trevorrow gets crushed by the skeleton.

Differences from the movie[]

  • Gennaro sleeps in the helicopter.
  • Ian Malcolm chews gum in the helicopter.
  • Ian explains chaos theory to Ellie in the helicopter, rather than in the Explorer. Therefore, he doesn't demonstrate his theory with the water drops, so Ellie doesn't seem to understand.
  • Ian only seems to show interest in Ellie in the helicopter, rather than throughout most of the story like in the movie. Therefore, Alan only shows jealousy towards Ian during the helicopter scene.
  • Gennaro is not ill when the helicopter lands.
  • There are no drivers for the Jeeps: John drives the first one with Ian, Alan and Ellie, while Gennaro is alone in the second one.
  • The setting is different during the encounter with the Brachiosaurus: there is no grass, there are more trees and the Parasaurolophus are replaced by Triceratops, due to the fact that there is no Parasaurolophus in the Lego Jurassic Park sets.
  • Gennaro is not seen during the viewing of the cartoon about Mr DNA. However, it is possible that he is still being chased by the Triceratops at this time.
    • Gennaro is then never seen again until the introduction of Hammond's children, during which he will already be installed in the Explorer.
  • The cow used to feed the Velociraptors is not the same color as in the movie.
  • The entire scene of the raptor's birth in the laboratory is omitted. Consequently, Dr. Wu is never seen, and Alan only discovers the raptors once he is at the Raptor Pen.
  • The cow falls into the raptor paddock when her harness accidentally comes loose, rather than still being attached to the harness when she is devoured in the movie.
  • After the scene at the raptor paddock, Hammond asks who is hungry, referring to the next scene in the film which is the dinner. This scene is also omitted in the adaptation.
  • A scene is added, in which the characters visit the control room and meet Arnold and Nedry.
  • Arnold is never seen smoking.
  • Hammond suggests that the children ride in the Explorer with Gennaro because he is less adventurous, and thus considers that they will be safe with him. Therefore, at no point does Alan show that he hates children.
  • Everyone gets out of stationary vehicles before seeing the Triceratops, rather than getting out of the moving vehicle after seeing it. Therefore, the reason why the vehicles are stopped is not explained.
  • Ellie had already packed a pair of gloves with her. Additionally, she is not seen digging through dinosaur droppings, although she mentions that she is going to do so.
  • Night vision goggles appear to be just binoculars.
  • Rexy doesn't eat a goat before touching the fence. In fact, no goats are seen in this short.
  • Tim appears to be okay after the car hits the trees. Besides, the entire scene where Alan helps Tim get down from the tree is omitted.
  • Dennis is surprised by a Dilophosaurus on the road, rather than a sign.
  • Dennis's death scene moves much more quickly: the Dilophosaurus gets angry quickly, Dennis only receives venom once, and he is killed outside the car rather than inside. Additionally, he is not seen losing the Barbasol.
  • The T. rex is still near the enclosure when Ellie and Muldoon find Ian, rather than coming back from between the trees.
  • The Brachiosaurus that Alan and the children see when they wake up are in a lake rather than in the middle of the jungle.
  • The Gallimimus scene is completely omitted.
  • Ray Arnold doesn't get to the maintenance shed before Ellie does. Therefore, he is not killed, and Ellie is not attacked by a raptor.
  • The painted wall in the visitors center turns out to be a canvas, and the raptor tears it apart by jumping through it. The Parasaurolophus on this wall are also replaced by Triceratops.
  • Because Ellie wasn't attacked by a raptor, it's Tim who says they can't open the doors.
  • Tim and Lex only seem to be being chased by a single raptor.
  • Alan and Ellie don't try to grab a gun when the raptor tries to force the door.
  • The sauropod skeleton is placed on the ground rather than suspended in the air.
  • In the end, Alan sleeps in the helicopter with the children, rather than admiring a flight of pelicans.

Easter eggs[]

  • Ian Malcolm in the present scenes is modeled after his Jurassic World Dominion model, since it takes place 30 years after the events of Jurassic Park, or about a year after the events of the last film..
    • In contrast, he wears an unbuttoned black shirt, leaving his torso visible, similar to his Jurassic Park outfit.
    • When he changes into more comfortable clothes, he wears a bathrobe decorated with dinosaur motifs, which seem to recall Simon Masrani's pajamas in episode 9 of Legend of Isla Nublar.
  • Ian also owns a black Jurassic Park mug, a very popular item among fans, which can be seen in the background of the first film, and at numerous points in the Legend of Isla Nublar series.
  • You can see a T. rex skeleton embedded in the wall above the sofa at Ian's house. This is a reference to the T. rex skeleton embedded in the exterior wall above the visitor center's front door in the first film.
  • Alan and Hammond own their Legend of Isla Nublar models. However, Alan has hair when he takes off his hat, unlike in the series where he appears to be bald.
  • In the helicopter, Hammond introduces Ian to Ellie by comparing him to a rock star, which is a reference to the movie, where he criticizes Gennaro for inviting a rock star.
  • Ian explains the meaning of the island's name Isla Nublar, an explanation given in Michael Chrichton's novel, but in no film in the franchise.
  • We can see on the shelf in the background at Ian's house the model of the Jurassic World doors, seen in Masrani's office throughout Legend of Isla Nublar. This is perhaps a reminder of his visit to this park in the 5th episode of the series.
    • The famous night vision goggles from the first film can also be seen on the shelf, along with various dinosaur plushies seen repeatedly in Legend of Isla Nublar.
    • He also has some dinosaur eggs and a piece of amber containing a trapped mosquito.
  • At the raptor paddock, Alan terrifies the cow by explaining raptor hunting methods to the group. This cow replaces the child from the dig site whom Alan similarly terrifies at the beginning of the movie.
  • A Dilophosaurus plush is seen on Dennis Nedry's desk during the control room tour, an obvious reference to his death.
  • Ian has a bush trimmed in the shape of the logo in his garden.
  • Nedry loses control of his vehicle when a Dilophosaurus appears on the road. This is a nod to Michael Chrichton's original storyline, in which Nedry got lost after seeing a dinosaur crossing the road.
  • When Ian plays the electric guitar at home, above the fireplace in the background you can see a painting of him in his famous Jurassic Park pose, in pop art style.
  • T. rex screams in pain after stepping on a Lego piece. This is a reference to the common running gag that stepping on a Lego hurts terribly.
  • Spielberg wears his famous pop art dinosaur T-shirt worn behind the scenes of Jurassic Park.
  • Although Ray is not killed, he is absent from the scenes where the heroes flee the island, referring to his death.
  • Ian also has the unofficial The Lost World story. He specifies that it is his favorite story, since he is the main character.
