The leopard (Panthera pardus) is a species of panther that lives in Africa and Asia. It was formely found in Europe during the Pleistocene, but became extinct in this continent. It lives in a variety of habitats, from rainforest to steppe, as well as arid and montane areas. This predator has spotted patterns for camouflage and rest on branches of trees. Eight subspecies are known, and all of them are endangered (aside from the Indian leopard (Panthera pardus fusca), who is listed as near threatened by the IUCN).
The leopard competes for food with other predators such as lions, cheetahs, hyenas, African wild dogs, tigers, and dholes. The preys are mostly ungulates and primates, which it drags them up a tree. Outside of the mating season, it is solitary.
Attacks of leopards on humans are known. One individual from the Rudraprayag district, India, killed 125 people, perhaps 400.
