Mesosaurus is an extinct genus of mesosaurid reptile from the Early Permian of southern Africa and South America. It is an extremely significant animal for the studies of reptile evolution, likely being among the earliest known marine reptiles, amniote evolution, with fossils of this genus containing the oldest recorded evidence of amniote embryos, and continental drift, as its discovery in two separate continents despite it being a coastal animal unlikely to cross the Atlantic Ocean indicates that Africa and South America were once joined together.
