The narwhal (Monodon monoceros) is a species of toothed whale native to the Arctic. Its closest relative is the beluga whale, which lives in the same place, leading to both animals to interbreed. It is known for its long tusk, which is actually a tooth. It reaches up a length of 1.5 to 3 meters. It is also among the deepest-diving cetaceans, reaching a depth of 2,370 meters . The narwhal feeds on fishes, cephalopods, and shrimps.
The use of the tusk is believed to have fuctionned as a weapon, a tool for feeding, attracting mates or sensing water salinity.
