Noise is the fifteenth chapter in the Fourth Configuration. It centres on a discussion on dinosaur extinction and the discovery of Sarah Harding walking on the island.
Plot[]
Jack Thorne is driving the Ford Explorer along the jungle path, following a game trail. He turns to Ian Malcolm and continues the previous discussion, asking Malcolm the dinosaurs became extinct. Malcolm answers with a summary of the dinosaurs forming up during the Triassic, proliferated during the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. Eddie adds that humans have lasted only three million years. Malcolm veers off topic, talking first how some apes have lasted longer than humans, then cavemen and next aggressive extinction caused by humans. He is finally drawn back to topic, stating how successful dinosaurs were, forming around twenty-one major groups, then Camarasaurus and Fabrosaurus first died off, with many others living throughout the Cretaceous period. He suddenly stops, telling the others he hears a sound. While Thorne doesn't hear anything, Malcolm says he heard a sound like an internal-combustion engine coming eastwards. Thorne says he can't imagine a gas-like sound since there's no gas on the island. Arby radios and tells them to switch on their dashboard monitor. Initially, the adults do not see anything then a flash of khaki, an a person appears on screen. Malcolm exclaims the person is Sarah Harding. Thorne contacts Levine, however, Levine typically doesn't answer. He tells Eddie to pick Levine up using the motorcycle while he and Malcolm pick Harding up.
Goofs[]
Malcolm states or rather Michael Crichton writes, dinosaurs lasted 150 million years. Recent sources state they lasted 165 million years on earth.
