The ocean sunfish (Mola mola), also known as the common mola, is a species of mola and one of the largest bony fish in the world. It lives in tropical and temperate waters around planet Earth. It was formerly identified as the heaviest bony fish, that record belonging to the giant sunfish. The fry is very different from the adult form, resembling spiky pufferfishes. Predators of the ocean sunfish include sea lions, killer whales, and sharks.
Ocean sunfishes are considered a delicacy in some parts of the world, for example, Japan, South Korea, and TaÏwan. It was assumed that its diet consists of jellyfishes, ctenophores, and salps. However, genetic analysis reveals that it is a carnivore, feasting on other prey from small fishes to squids. The sunfish will occasionally eat eel grass as well. The ocean sunfish is listed as vulnerable by the IUCN due to drift gillnets.
