Opossums are members of the marsupial family that are endemic to the Americas. Comprising 126 species and 18 genera, they are the largest order of marsupials in the Western Hemisphere. They originated in South America, and arrived in North America during the Great American Interchange. The Virginia opossum (Didelphis virginiana) is the only species of opossum found within the United States and Canada. It is often simply referred as opossum or possum.
Opossums are known for their ability to feign death, mimicking the smell of a sick or dead animal in order to avoid its predators. They are also known to be nocturnal animals. Opossums temporarily occupy abandoned burrows, despite not digging or putting much effort into building their own.
