Ostriches are large flightless birds (ratites to be precise) in the genus Struthio that lives in open arid and semi-arid habitats of Africa. It was once present in Asia during the Pleistocene. They are the heaviest and largest living birds, with adult common ostriches (Struthio camelus) weighing between 63.5 to 145 kilograms. Their egg is the largest one of any living land animal (though actually the smallest relative to adult bird size), averaging 15 centimeters (5.9 inches) long, 13 centimeters (5.1 inches) wide, and weighing 1.4 kilograms (3.1 pounds), over 20 times heavier than a chicken's); with the largest living egg weighing at 2.589 kilograms (5.7 pounds), though the extinct East Asian ostrich (Struthio anderssoni) laid eggs weighing at 270 kilograms (595.25 pounds). Attacks of ostriches on humans are known.

There are 2 extant species of ostrich: the common ostrich and the Somali ostrich (Struthio molybdophanes). The Somali ostrich is found in the Horn of Africa, an area of Africa isolated by the geographic barrier of the East African Rift.

Mr. DNA([[|src]])
