Pederpes (meaning "Peter's foot") is a genus of amphibian (in a biological sense) that lived during the Early Carboniferous period in what is now central Scotland. It contains only one species, P. finneyae. The name honors the paleontologist Peder Aspen, who discovered the fossilfrom the Ballagan Formation in 1971. However, it was classified as a lobe-finned fish even though the type specimen was a nearly complete skeleton. It would be named and reclassified as a stegocephalian in 2002 by Jennifer Clark. Measuring one meter long, the feet were adapted to terrestrial locomotion, unlike the family members of Ichthyostega during the Devonian. Pederpes is from the same family branch as Whatcheeria, who lived in North America.
Being a primitive amphibian, Pederpes is an important fossil because it comes from the period known as the Romer's gap and has provided biologists with rare informations about the development of tetrapods in a time where terrestrial fauna was rare.
