Piranhas are freshwater fishes that inhabit the rivers, floodplains, lakes, and reservoirs of the tropics of South America. They vary extensively in ecology and behavior depending on the species. The most depictable trait is that the piranha (the red-bellied piranha to be precise) is a small predatory fish with sharped teeth that hunts in schools. Nowadays, research revealed that they are in reality shy fish and the reason they live in school is for protection against their own predators. While their main diet consists of other fishes, they will take plant material, leading to their classification as omnivorous.
The Megapiranha, as its name suggests, is a large extinct genus of piranha that lived 10 to 8 million years ago, reaching a length of 71 cm (28 in) long.
