Placochelys is a genus of placodont reptile that lived during the Late Triassic period and that was erected by Otto Jaekel in 1902. Fossils of this creature have been found in Germany, Austria, Hungary, and Italy. The genus has only one species, Placochelys placodonta. It looks similar to a modern sea turtle, and grew to about 90 centimeters in length. Its carapace is flat and covered with kobbly plates while its skull is compact triangular. Placochelys had two pairs of palatal teeth, which it used for crushing shellfishes and hard-shelled prey. The limbs were paddle-shaped for swimming, but they had discernable toes, as well as a short tail, unlike the sea turtles of today.
