Pliosaurus was a large short-necked Plesiosaur that lived in the late Jurassic period(155-145 mya) of Europe. Once thought to contain many species, this genus now has only 6. The largest species was Pliosaurus funkei. P.funkei was first discovered in 2004 and officially named in 2012. he expedition to find these fossils were the subject of the History program Predator X. P.funkei is known from 2 specimens composed of 20,000 fragments found on the island of Svalbard, Norway. It grew to nearly 43 feet(13 meters) and weighed upwards of 35 tonnes.
Pliosaurus, like other large members of its family, such as the more famous Liopluerodon, ate other sea reptiles such as long-necked Plesiosaurs and Ichthyosaurs such as Cryopterygius. Pliosaurs probably bit the fins off of prey to disable them before they killed them.
