Profile[]

Polacanthus eat from ground herbivore feeders. They are heavily armored and can strike each other and fight predators using their heavy club tails.
They are the shyest of ankylosaurids and live in tiny social groups and prefer to have few dinosaurs of other species close to them.
Their ideal territory consists of modest areas of grassland and little forest.

Description[]

Polacanthus was an ankylosaurian (armored) dinosaur found in the UK. Its name means 'many-thorned lizard' from the spikes upon its back.
Although armored like other genera in its family, it lacks the defensive tail spikes seen on others.

Discovery[]

The first Polacanthus remains were discovered on the Isle of Wight in the UK in 1865. The holotype skeleton was later excavated from the Wessex Formation.

Paleoecology[]

The Wessex Formation has revealed a wide variety of flora and fauna, including numerous aquatic creatures. This indicates a coastal environment with waterways and plains.
