Proterogyrinus was an advanced amphibian that lived during the Carboniferous period. It was an anthracosaur, which meant that it featured many reptile-like qualities. Unlike many other amphibians of its time, Proterogyrinus was capable of hunting on land as well as in water, allowing it to avoid competition from large fish and other amphibians, although it still needed to lay its eggs in water. Its diet consisted of insects, fish, primitive reptiles and other amphibians.
