Protopteryx (meaning "primitive feather") is a genus of enantiornithean that lived during the Early Cretaceous in what is now China. Fossils of this bird were in the Yixian Formation, which contained popular dinosaurs like Psittacosaurus and Sinosauropteryx. It is however also found in the Huajiying Formation, which contained many bird species and a compsognathid called Xunmenglong. Protopteryx was discovered and described in 2000 by Chinese paleontologists. It has long tail feathers that were thin and needle-like, similar to the modern red bird-of-paradise. It may be a carnivore, as evidenced by teeth similar to those seen in Archaeopteryx.
