The reindeer (Rangifer tarandus), or caribou, is a species of deer native to Arctic, subarctic, tundra, boreal, and mountainous regions of Northern Europe, Siberia, and North America. There are 19 subspecies of reindeer, although recent studies suggest the splitting into different species over their range.
Reindeer occurs in both migratory or sedentary populations, and the size of the herd varies greatly in alternate regions. It varies in size and color too. The subspecies that live in the tundra are adapted for the extreme cold, while others are adapted for long-distance migrations. Even though reindeer are quite numerous, it is listed as vulnerable according to the IUCN. The reindeer is the only successful semi-domesticated deer in the world. In traditional Christmas legends, Santa Claus uses reindeer to pull a sleigh through the night sky to help him deliver gifts during Christmas Eve.
The Svalbard reindeer (Rangifer tarandus platyrhynchus) lives on the archipelago of Svalbard from Norway. It is the smallest subspecies of reindeer. Compared to others, it is short-legged and possess a small rounded head.
