Scorpionfish are (mostly marine) fish in the family Scorpaenidae that are reputed for being venomous, with many species being the most venomous. The venom comes from sharp spines that are coated with a mucus. There are six subfamilies of scorpionfish known containing 39 genera and at least 388 species. They are only found in tropical and temperate seas.
The lionfish is a genus of scorpionfish, abeilt it is colored to warn off other predators.

DNA of an unknown genus/species of scorpionfish was used in the creation of the Scorpios rex. This lead to the hybrid have poisonous quills at the end of its tail.
