Malcolm witnessed the feedings of a baby gorilla, a koala, and finally Dorje the snow leopard cub as he waited. While Dorje was being fed Gelman told Malcolm that Dorje liked to be petted. Malcolm, therefore, attempted to stroke the leopard's belly, but when he reached his hand out, the female leopard bit him, though the bite failed to break through his skin.
