The sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka), also known as the red salmon, kokanee salmon, blueback salmon, and simply sockeye, is a species of salmon that lives in the northern Pacific Ocean and the rivers discharging into it. It is known for its reproduction and its life cycle. Salmons are born in the river, and move to the ocean in adulthood. During reproduction, they return to the rivers to lay eggs, but sadly die after spawn.

While living in the ocean, the sockeye salmon is blue tinged with silver in color. When it returns to the river, its body becomes red and its head turns green. There is also sexual dimorphism between males and females at reproduction. The males go through numerous changes, incuding an increase in body length, hump height, and snout length (though this also happens to females).

Populations of sockeye salmon that are landlocked within the continent do exist, where they are referred to as kokanee.
