The strawberry poison dart frog (Oophaga pumilio) is a species of frog native to Central America, ranging from Nicaragua to Costa Rica and Panama. It is found in humid lowlands and premontane forests, but can also be found in plantations. It is primarily terrestrial.
Poison dart frogs are known to be toxic animals that sport bright colors to warn off their predators. They get their skin venomous by eating certain subspecies of mites and ants. The strawberry poison dart frog is the most toxic member of its genus (Oophaga), but not the most poisonous of the whole dentrobatids. Perhaps most famous for its widespread variation in coloration, it comprises approximately 15–30 color morphs, most of which are presumed to be true-breeding.
