Description[]
- Suchomimus was a spinosaurid dinosaur found in Africa. Its name means 'crocodile mimic' because of its crocodile-like snout. This snout would have been better suited for hunting fish than the usual theropod skulls like Tyrannosaurus.
- Only a single species is known for this genus, and unlike Spinosaurus it lacked the large sail on its back.
Discovery[]
- Suchomimus fossils were first discovered in 1997 from Gadoufaoua in Niger. Other partial skeletons and fragments have been found in the wider Erlhaz Formation since then.
Paleoecology[]
- In the Early Cretaceous epoch, the Sahara Desert was very different to what it is today. Back then it was a lush, swampy environment.
