"Stop!"
—The Handler finally talks(src)

The Handler was an unnamed and enigmatic woman who controlled a trio of Atrociraptor named Tiger, Panthera, and Ghost (And later also Red), and used them to attack people she saw fit. She was the secondary antagonist of Jurassic World: Chaos Theory, serving as the main antagonist of Season 1, a flashback antagonist of season 2, and the secondary antagonist of season 3.

History[]

Early Life[]

The true name, identity and background of The Handler is unknown except that she at some moment in her life she became involved with dinosaurs and how to handle them without being attacked.

By 2022, Santos had bred four genetically modified Atrociraptor in one of her laboratory facilities. Named Red, Panthera, Ghost, and Tiger, they were trained by Santos and the Handler using techniques pioneered by others. The raptors were trained to kill on command, using their natural senses and weapons to track and kill anything directed at them. Instead of using electronic devices to communicate with the animals, the Handler had a different approach and used a whistle to give the raptors directions. Direct and effective, the number and duration of the whistles allowed specific information to be conveyed to the raptors in the field, which they learned to recognize and follow.

Over time the Handler formed a close bond with the raptors, learning their methods of communication just as much as they learned hers. She and the raptors developed a powerful mutual trust.

Jurassic World: Chaos Theory[]

Season 1[]

In the spring of 2022, the Handler was sent by The Broker to kill the Nublar Six. She hired Dudley Cabrera in an attempt to kill Brooklynn first, who had been following leads about the initial black-market auction and the corruption in the Department of Prehistoric Wildlife.

Brooklynn had been posting on the Dark Jurassic forums looking to buy a dinosaur on the black market. One of Brooklynn's usual contacts was hacked on the orders of Santos, who gave him details about a supposed DPW sale. Brooklynn accepted the offer, though in reality, Santos was arranging for a corrupt DPW agent named Mateo to deliver a captured Allosaurus there and unleash it to attack Brooklynn. The Handler was waiting nearby with Ghost, Panthera, and Tiger, ready to attack should the Allosaurus fail to fulfill its task. Its death was meant to look like a random animal attack, a common occurrence in remote parts of the state.

The Atrociraptor cornered Brooklynn, while the Handler gave the order to kill her, but the Allosaurus attacked, overwhelming Ghost as it challenged the other raptors. Panthera and Tiger were busy fighting the larger theropod while Brooklynn tried to escape, but Ghost blocked her way. The Handler gave the order to attack, and Ghost attacked Brooklynn's left arm as she tried to block the bite, causing a severe wound below her elbow. They left her lying on the road, leaving her for dead shortly after, though unknown to her, Brooklynn had survived.

Later, she was sent along her Atrociraptor by the Broker to against Darius Bowman and the rest of the Nublar Six to killing, after Ben Pincus was on the Dark Jurassic forums exchanging conspiracy theories and stories about Brooklynn's "death". The Handler tracked him to Darius's cabin. Tiger and Panthera broke into the cabin. The two young men proved harder to kill than expected. They managed to reach Ben's truck, escaping toward the highway. After a difficult, high-speed chase, the Handler was forced to stop the abductors and formulate a new plan. After Darius, Ben, Sammy Guitierrez, and Bumpy thwarted the assassination attempt at Sammy’s ranch, she recalled the raptors into a modified water truck and drove them off to where the three were heading.[1]

She later made herself known when she sent her raptors after Darius and Kenji, but they killed Daniel Kon instead, who sacrificed himself to save his son and redeemed himself for his past evil actions. When Mateo rescued Darius and Kenji, she recalled the raptors, knowing they wouldn’t be able to catch up to them. She later appeared during the final battle and sent her Atrociraptor pack to kill Cabrera before he betrayed them and because he had become useless to her employer before sending them after the Nublar Six again. However, they were thwarted again by Mateo, who drove a truck into the warehouse and knocked her and the Atrociraptor pack unconscious, freeing some of the dinosaurs and resulting in her henchman Jensen getting killed.[2]

The raptors would continue hunting the Nublar Six and Mateo upon waking up. After the battle was lost, she came to and attempted to send her Atrociraptor pack after the Nublar Six again. However, after realizing that they were too injured from their previous battle against Big Eatie and an Allosaurus to fight any further, she simply looked at the Nublar Six furiously before fleeing with her Atrociraptor, caressing Ghost gently, then escaping to presumably rejoin the Broker.

Season 2[]

She is briefly shown in a flashback instructing Ghost and her other Atrociraptor to attack Brooklyn on the night of the latter's attack.

Season 3[]

On the orders of Soyona Santos, the Handler and Tiger terrorized Professor Chuck Desai who had mouthed off to a senator about not being fooled by Lewis Dodgson and Biosyn. After cornering the man, the Handler whispered instructions to him and later reported to Santos about her successful mission.[3] Subsequently, Desai suddenly threw his support behind Biosyn holding dominion over all dinosaurs despite previously being vocally opposed to any one organization holding such power.[4] On Santos' behalf, the Handler had secured Desai's support through intimidation for Biosyn.[5]

In the Malta catacombs, Dodgson asked Santos to send the Handler to kill a local regional counselor who is holding up Biosyn's special land permit, but Santos suggested instead using intimidation like they did with Desai which Dodgson seemingly conceded to. Brooklynn encountered the Handler on her way back who set the Atrociraptor on her. As the Handler was about to have the raptor pack kill Brooklynn, she was stopped by Santos who told the woman off for using her whistle against Santos' orders when Santos has spent good money on having them trained with her laser. Santos pointedly aimed the laser at the Handler before using it to send the Atrociraptor back into their cages. Santos had Brooklynn help her move Red over with the other raptors, telling the Handler that they had a new assignment from Dodgson, the details of which they would discuss later. Santos threatened to demonstrate the laser's other use on the Handler if she ever attacked Brooklynn again. As Santos and Brooklynn left, Dodgson collected his dropped bag, urging the Handler to have patience and telling her that the raptors would be hers.[5]

Shortly thereafter, a furious Santos saw a news report revealing that Italian Regional Counsellor Corso had been killed in a dinosaur attack and realized that Dodgson had gone behind her back to use the Handler and her pack to kill the man.[6]

The Handler and her pack later visited an Italian town where a Pyroraptor was on the loose. The pack herded the rogue dinosaur into a containment van with the Handler being unaware that the Nublar Five were hiding nearby. Darius and Ben noticed that the Handler's van had Biosyn's name on it and were shocked to learn that she was now apparently working for Biosyn.[6]

When the Handler returned to the Malta catacombs, Santos pointedly addressed the subject of the Handler's loyalty and then tested her laser on the Atrociraptor who immediately turned on the Handler when it was used on her. Santos sent the pack back to their cages and suggested that they "retire" the pack before it turned on the Handler completely, threatening to sell the Atrociraptor at the black market and leaving the Handler impotently furious.[7]

Later, under orders from Santos, the Handler was supposed to eliminate Davi. However, due to Brooklyn's interference, Davi survived, although the Handler had knocked him unconscious. Enraged with Brooklynn, the Handler chased her through the catacombs, knocking her down and causing Brooklynn to drop her phone and lose her prosthetic arm. After pinning Brooklynn against a wall, the latter promised her that she could help her get her Atrociraptor back, to which the Handler agreed. Both of them snuck aboard the truck used to ship them, but when Santos and Rainn Delacourt were ambushed by French Intelligence, Brooklynn tried to knock the Handler out, which caused them to fight shortly before both getting knocked unconscious when the truck crashed.

After waking up, the Handler left Brooklynn stuck under some debris and went to chase after Santos. As she chased her across Malta, she used her whistle to call her pack, confronting Santos in the ruins of an ancient amphitheater. Here she fought with Santos, but Santos used her laser to send Red to kill her. Upon hearing her scream, the Atrociraptor pack came and defended her, forcing Red to change sides and help them. Frustrated, Santos called the Carnotaurus to fight, controlling it similarly to how she controlled the Atrociraptor. During the fight, Boss killed Ghost, causing the Handler to become devastated and trying to stop the fight. She yelled out to stop Boss and then attempted to tame it before being eaten by it. The remaining Atrociraptor, after losing both pack leaders and hearing her dying screams, fled.

Physical Appearance[]

Personality[]

"Patience, just patience. They'll be yours."
Lewis Dodgson, to the Handler, about her Atrociraptor pack(src)

The Handler presented a chilling demeanor, characterized by her eerie silence, sparse whispering, and robotic-like behavior, including a notable lack of blinking. Her willingness to deploy her raptors as lethal weapons without hesitation showcased her ruthless and heartless nature. However, a contrasting facet of her personality emerged in her interactions with the Atrociraptor pack, demonstrating a deep affection and bond. She handled them with gentle care, frequently caressing them, evoking a maternal instinct, and prioritized their well-being, even retreating to prevent their harm. Her anger and glare towards the campers suggested a personal investment in her raptors' safety, hinting at a complex and multifaceted personality that blurred the lines between cold calculation and maternal devotion.

After Santos took away her Atrociraptors pack, the Handler became vengeful towards her and desperate to reclaim her dinosaurs, even briefly allying with Brooklynn to this end. After being reminded that Brooklynn had helped her, the Handler visibly hesitated before deciding not to help Brooklynn. She was visibly devastated by Ghost's death, speaking out loud for the first time in an attempt to save her other Atrociraptor, once again demonstrating her love for them, and attempting to tame the Carnotaurus. However, this failed, leading to her death.

Trivia[]

  • Concept art (shown above) indicates that the handler was going to be either an elderly woman, a black woman, or even a man before sticking with the final design.
  • In some ways, the Handler can be considered a foil to Kash D. Langford from Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous, although both are significant villains in their respective series.
    • While both demonstrated a remorseless nature and did not hesitate to utilize dinosaurs as living weapons, Kash was short-tempered and prone to violent outburst, in stark contrast to the Atrociraptor Handler, who demonstrated a chilling but silent nature, rarely making any noise beyond the whistles that she used to control her raptors.
    • Although both villains apparently shared a callous willingness to use dinosaurs as a source of profit, Kash never demonstrated the same affinity for certain individual dinosaurs that the Handler showed with in her relationship with Ghost, Panthera, and Tiger. The gentle manner that the Handler showed towards the Atrociraptors under her care and her usage of a whistle to control them was a strong divergence from Kash, who sought to control dinosaurs with technology while expressing psychopathic desire to see uncompliant dinosaurs come to harm.
      • Ironically enough, it was Kash's reliance on his technology that led to his demise while attempting to kill Daniel Kon without success, unlike the Handler, who successfully murdered Kon with the raptors that she controlled through more naturally created signals.
  • As revealed in "Morituri Te Salutant," the Handler is capable of speaking in a normal tone of voice and only speaks in a whisper by choice rather than out of necessity. She lets out a few loud screams during her final moments as well.
  • The Handler's bond with her Atrociraptor pack is similar to Owen's with his Velociraptor pack but even then, both of them did lose their authority as their alphas temporary to another character (Soyona Santos and Indominus Rex, respectively).
  • The Handler is the 3rd voice-acting role of Sumalee Montano for a DreamWorks TV series character after Shi Long in Kung Fu Panda: Paws of Destiny and Fanthom in DreamWorks Dragons: Rescue Riders.
  • As of season 3. The only thing she has said was “Stop!” before her death.
