The High Hide IV is the eighth chapter in the Fifth Configuration. Arby accurately spots raptors heading towards the direction of the High Hide and Levine thinks they are safe. However he is wrong.

Plot[]

After learning from Richard Levine that Sarah Harding, Ian Malcolm and Jack Thorne have escaped from the trailer, Kelly Curtis cheers. Arby Benton however snatches Levines' night vision googles and the latter irritably remarks that is expensive. The computer genius adjust the googles and sees what he spotted in the previous chapter: twelve Velociraptors heading towards their direction. One raptor is in the lead and it isn't easy to discern any organizational behavior. With blood on their snouts and eyes appearing green through the googles, the raptor pack appears not to have notice the group in the High Hide.

Arby again tells Levine would not have discovered it without Arby's assistance. Levine explains to Eddie Carr that the group are downwind of the raptors, thus they will not smell them and he guesses that the raptors are simply following the game trail. Eddie is still concerned yet Levine assures the raptors cannot jump up to their twenty feet high, although Eddie remembers Levine stating the opposite. The advice to all is to remain silent.

Malcolm remarks he doesn't have much luck on expeditions like in the previous incident while Harding discovers he is terribly bleeding and Thorne heads to get a medical kit. The pair are now in the stable trailer and Harding assures that he'll be fine, although the wound is very deep. They share a little banter, then Malcolm accepts the large amount of morphine.

Ever the focused palaeologist and indifferent of everything else, Levine is staring at the raptor pack, wishing to spot organizational structure or hierarchy. This is not the case despite their known intelligence. Meanwhile, Eddies comforts the kids with Kelly appearing calm, Arby however in panic. Levine confidently doesn't think they should not fear as they are secure high enough still wishing to see a pattern in the raptor pack. The raptors were exactly following the trail the Parasaurolophus took in the sixteenth chapter in the Fourth Configuration focusing on each other. Suddenly, one raptor pauses near the High Hide and digs around the bottom of the structure. Levine wonders what the raptor is up to then sees it picks up the wrapper of the candy bar he dropped previously. The raptor stares at the structure and snarls, indicating Levine's assurance is all incorrect.

Note[]

The raptor here who picked up the candy bar wrapper is clearly the one who enjoyed eating Howard King's leftover candy in the chapter The Herd.

Raptors were not so intelligent, see this article, this article and this article.
