Synopsis[]
Brooklynn and Santos head to Malta to meet their new partner. Back in Italy, the friends investigate the origins of a mysterious feather.
Plot Summary[]
On Soyona Santos' plane, Brooklynn and Santos play a game of chess with each other. Santos notes that Brooklynn's dexterity with her prosthesis is improving and Brooklynn admits that it's taking some getting used to, but Brooklynn is getting the hang of it. As the prosthesis is somewhat painful for her, Brooklynn considers removing it, but Santos tells her not to as her uncle's missing limb would swell on flights if he removed his prosthesis.
Santos receives a call and she tells the person on the other end that they have the eggs and the DNA samples and will be arriving in a few hours. Santos confirms to Brooklynn that they're really working with Biosyn and Brooklynn recalls that Kenji had dealings with Lewis Dodgson who had seemed untrustworthy, but Santos compares building strong relationships to a game of chess: the queen can't win alone, no matter how powerful she is. Each partner has a role to play, each having something that the other needs. Biosyn offers the Broker unfettered access to every dinosaur on Earth. They'll have the chance to sell to buyers of all sorts, legitimate or otherwise. Santos' operation shares the profits with Biosyn and Biosyn gets to maintain their squeaky clean image. Brooklynn asks how the Broker is so sure that Biosyn will get that access, but Santos doesn't answer, winning their game in a checkmate as the plane makes its decent into Malta.
In Italy, Darius, Sammy and Ben enjoy playing with Smoothie, but Yaz is too worried about Brooklynn. Sammy suggests that they should just wait for Brooklynn to ask for their help since she seems to be doing just fine without them, but Darius awkwardly extracts himself from the argument rather than offer up his own opinion. Gia hasn't had any luck identifying the feather that Ben found in her car and Ben suggests that it could be from a dinosaur despite the fact that no one is known to have created any feathered dinosaurs. There's a moment of terror when they believe that Nonna is coming, but it turns out to just be Kenji. Gia is surprised that Nonna gave Kenji a bowl of kumquats from the garden as Gia's grandmother never lets her eat them. Kenji feeds them to Smoothie to Ben's obvious jealousy as the baby dinosaur rejects his offering of -- admittedly terrible -- food.
Ben and Gia speculate that someone had created a Yutyrannus, a Sinornithosaurus or an Anchiornis. Yaz watches them with fondness, but Sammy remains silent. Darius wonders who would bring back a feathered dinosaur and why and Ben points out that the Broker had a whole dinosaur making factory at the secret lab in Senegal. However, Darius doubts that it was the Broker as those dinosaurs were cloned from species that already exist, and this feathered dinosaur would be the first of its kind. Darius guesses that one of the other genetic companies that are out there are responsible and Ben wants to do something about the dinosaur as it could put this whole area in danger. Gia sighs at how magnificent her boyfriend is, which Darius awkwardly agrees with.
Brooklynn drives a containment van containing Red through the Malta catacombs to where Biosyn has set up. Much to Brooklynn's surprise, they are meeting with Lewis Dodgson himself, and she discreetly starts recording with her phone. Dodgson vaguely recognizes Brooklynn from his dealings with Mantah Corp, but Santos simply introduces Brooklynn as her colleague and Dodgson cracks a joke about Brooklynn's arm. Dodgson explains that people don't like to come down into the catacombs because of all of the ridiculous superstitions, making it the perfect place to create his own dinosaur underworld. It's located directly below the Amber Clave Night Market, meaning that both the dinos and Dodgson can be transported undetected. Brooklynn is surprised to learn of the existence of a market for dinosaurs and Dodgson reveals that Santos and Brooklynn are here to take it over, something that Santos hadn't told Brooklynn before. Now that Chuck Desai is on their side, they're one step closer to sealing the deal.
Dodgson receives a call and has to leave, promising to retrieve the cases with dinosaur eggs and DNA samples on his way out. As Dodgson has forgotten his bag, Brooklynn volunteers to go and get it for him, looking up Desai once she's alone. Brooklynn quickly looks through Dodgson's files for information on Desai, but can't find anything. Hit with an idea, Brooklynn brings up Dark Jurassic to reach out to Ben.
In Italy, Ben receives Brooklynn's message asking him about Desai. Darius, Yaz and Sammy argue about what to send back to their friend while Kenji simply watches from where he's looking after Smoothie. Kenji leaves with Smoothie, bumping into Nonna outside who sees the baby dinosaur. Fed up with his friend's arguing, Ben sends the video message himself, telling Brooklynn that it's weird because Desai had used to speak out against things like Biosyn's expansion and he suspects that someone got to the professor, but Ben doesn't have proof. Seeing her friends again, Brooklynn brightens up for a moment, but she quickly sobers and sends back a message claiming that it might be nothing and not to worry about it. Sammy is hurt by Brooklynn not even asking about them or apologizing, but Yaz thinks that Brooklynn reaching out is the closest thing to an apology that they're going to get right now and the two argue. While Yaz and Ben believe that their friend needs them, Darius admits that he's not so sure. Brooklynn encounters the Handler who begins to set the Atrociraptors on her.
Dodgson is pleased with the case of eggs that Santos gives him and the DNA samples. Dodgson tells Santos that he's still having trouble securing a special land permit because Biosyn Valley's local regional counsellor keeps getting in the way, so he wants Santos to send the Handler to kill him. Dodgson has tried everything else so he sees no other choice, but Santos feels that now is a time for discretion. They swayed Desai to their side through intimidation and she's sure that the regional counselor can be convinced through the same method. After a tense moment Dodgson seemingly concedes, then notices that Brooklynn hasn't yet returned.
As the Handler is about to have the raptor pack kill Brooklynn, she's stopped by Santos who tells the woman off for using her whistle against Santos' orders when Santos has spent good money on having them trained with her laser. Santos pointedly aims the laser at the Handler before using it to send the Atrociraptors back into their cages. Santos has Brooklynn help her move Red over with the other raptors, telling the Handler that they have a new assignment from Dodgson, the details of which they will discuss later. Santos threatens to demonstrate the laser's other use on the Handler if she ever attacks Brooklynn again. As Santos and Brooklynn leave, Dodgson collects his dropped bag, urging the Handler to have patience and telling her that the raptors will be hers.
A furious Nonna chases Kenji and Smoothie through the house, trying to kill the baby dinosaur. Kenji tells the old woman that Smoothie is not evil, he's just a baby dinosaur and not something that's going to curse her or humanity. Nonna orders Kenji to throw Smoothie out, but Kenji pleads with her as he can't let the baby be all alone. Seeing how much Smoothie means to Kenji, Nonna stops and, speaking in English for the first time, reassures Kenji that he's not alone either. Nonna recognizes that Kenji needs Smoothie too and agrees to let him stay. Kenji leaves Smoothie with Nonna while he goes to clean up. Seeing that the dinosaur has to go to the bathroom, Nonna takes him outside, but has to go back in when her timer goes off. When Kenji comes back to find that Nonna left Smoothie outside, he frantically goes to get him, only to discover that the baby dino has run away.
Elsewhere, the feathered dinosaur eats a man who is searching for his dog who he had let out.
