Thylacoleo is a carnivorous marsupial from Ice Age Australia. It earned the name "marsupial lion" because it has retractable claws much like a modern day lion. Despite its nickname, it wasn't part of the cat family, but was more closely related to wombats. It was one of the apex predators at its time, and probably fed on early man. It was known for climbing into trees and dropping down on its prey, earning it the nickname "drop cat." It shared its environment with the giant short-faced kangaroo Procoptodon, the giant wombat Diprotodon, and the giant lizard Megalania, an apex predator rival, and even early man (which it probably preyed upon and rivaled for top predator). When it had died out, no other Australian mammal became a mega-carnivore as it had. There are rumors of it having survived, but just as in case with Megalania they are not confirmed.
