Tree frogs, or treefrogs, are any species of frog that spend a major portion of their lifespan in trees, known as an arboreal state. Several lineages of frogs among the Neobatrachia suborder have given rise to tree frogs, although they are not closely related to each other.

Millions of years of convergent evolution resulted in very similar morphology even in species that are not very closely related. Tree frogs in seasonally arid environments have additionally adapted an extra-epidermal layer of lipid and mucus as an evolutionary convergent response to accommodate the periodic dehydration stress.

Tree frogs are members of the following families and genera: hylids or "true" treefrogs (Hylidae), which occur in the temperate to tropical parts of Eurasia north of the Himalayas, Australia, and the Americas; shrub frogs (Rhacophoridae), treefrogs of tropical regions around the Indian Ocean: Africa, South Asia, and Southeast Asia east to Lydekker's line (with few also occur in East Asia); glass frogs (Centrolenidae), translucent frogs native to Central and South America that are potentially closely related to hylids; reed frogs (Hyperoliidae), small frogs native to sub-Saharan Africa that are closely related to the burrowing Microhylidae; and bright-eyed frogs or skeleton frogs (Boophis), a genus of highly arboreal frogs in the subfamily Boophinae which evolved from the toxic terrestrial Mantellidae of Madagascar.

History[]

Jurassic Park[]

Tree frogs like the common reed frog (Hyperolius viridiflavus) were among several amphibians whose DNA was used by Henry Wu to supplement the DNA of Jurassic Park's dinosaurs and other animals, this particular species caused them to have the ability to change sex, thus being able to breed.

Jurassic World Incident[]

Tree frog DNA was used in the creation of the Scorpios rex and the Indominus rex, being added to the latter to adapt to the tropical climate of Isla Nublar, but it also added the ability to remove her thermal signature, which confused most of the heat-based infrared cameras.

Games[]

Minecraft Jurassic World[]

Tree frog DNA is among the modern animal DNA available in the game. It is required for the creation of all colorful dinosaurs, as well as the creation of the hybrids Indominus rex and Fascino nathus (though Cuttlefish DNA could also be used instead).

Toys[]

Jurassic Park: Chaos Effect[]

The DNA of an unidentified African species of tree frog (possibly the African foam-nest tree frog (Chiromantis rufescens) was used to create the Compstegnathus, giving them long tongues that they can use to lash out and wrap around unfortunate prey, dragging them into range of razor teeth and sharp tail spikes.
