The animatronic on set.

The production and direction of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom necessitated the construction and use of a full scale Tyrannosaurus rex animatronic, for use in certain scenes.

Its existence and use was originally leaked midway through 2017 by some posts on NeoGAF, and the animatronic was later seen in some behind the scenes videos leading up to a trailer release.

History[]

Construction[]

The T. rex animatronic was designed by a team of approximately 18 people, led by Creature Effects Supervisor, Neal Scanlan, who also did effects work on the Star Wars sequel trilogy and spin offs. A small scale maquette was designed, and shown off, and the full scale model was designed to move its head, neck and part of its torso, with the legs and rear being essentially designed as a stand in for CG effects added later on in the development process.

It has articulated eyes, was able to roar, and the effects team would use an unknown cocktail of slimy liquids to imitate saliva, which was done by manually spreading it onto the creation's teeth and mouth.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom[]

The Tyrannosaurus animatronic was utilized for short sequences involving Owen Grady and Claire Dearing's meeting with the park's original resident T. rex.
